Aditya Kashyap (Aditya Roy Kapur) is a young aspiring author, who works at his father Subhash Chandra Kashyap's (Prateik Babbar) company. Aditya meets with Rumi Vallabh (Kalki Koechlin) an environmentalist and activist, after saving her from some goons. A friendship develops between them and they meet regularly. Some time later he finds out that she is getting married to Chand Nawab (Ali Zafar). Aditya is devastated as he finds that Rumi was his first love. He decides to leave the city without letting anyone know that he has met Rumi before, not even his family. Meanwhile, Aditya's brother Arun (Shah Rukh Khan) also has a first love and he is in love with Sameer (Sonu Sood), but her family does not approve of the relationship as their other son is brain damaged. Aditya's father, however, approves of Arun's relationship because she would be able to help him look after his son. Rumi also supports them and poses as a doctor for Arun who suffers from epileptic seizures. Aditya rushes back to Mumbai and visits Rumi. He tells her that he needs time and tries to avoid her at every available moment. He starts going to the office and meets a very charming girl, Tina (Deepika Padukone). He instantly falls in love with her and she also falls in love with him. He introduces his family to her and then asks her to meet their father. They come home for dinner at Aditya's house. When they arrive, the family is shocked by Tina's rude behavior towards Aditya's parents. While having dinner, Arun comes running in asking for help because of his epileptic seizure.
